Note from the Author:

This book has been a dream of mine since our kids were in Kindergarten. It was hard for me to find any books to share with them that had children of color, let alone children of color with parents with a different skin color! So I wrote my own, and I held on to the scrap of paper that I had written the poem-type story on for more than 15 years.

In 2017 I was blessed to have my sister Martha add her amazing wordsmithing and editing skills to make the story truly pop alive. And not long after I was introduced to our incredible illustrator, Dawn Prindall, by my best friends. She took the words right off the pages with her incredible illustrations—full of whimsy, flow, color, and heartfelt meaningful details. There are accents of Guatemalan culture throughout, and so many vibrant, unique and loving details. It has been amazing to watch this book develop and become even better than I could ever have imagined with the input from Martha and Dawn. I can't wait for you to have it in your hands. Not only is this book a beautifully illustrated story of two little kids trying to get their Mom to take the day off work and take them to the beach, it has a few other goals....

1. Depicting Diverse Families - The key characters, two children and their Mom, do not look alike. The skin and hair colors of all three characters are meant to be noticeably different, but it is very clear they are a loving family. The noticeable differences are intentional. I wanted the readers to decide what the family relationships were and to leave room for kids to experience the story from the perspective of their own life experiences. Perhaps they are from a blended family for any variety of reasons, and maybe are not biologically related. It could be a single Mom, or not, … it just isn’t defined.
2. Taking Time – There is a message in the book to stop and take time once in a while to just spend it doing something special together with people you love. It's a reminder of where great memories come from... those moments which become priceless.
3. All Profits To The Guatemala Aid Fund – 100% of the profits will go to successful Guatemalan-run programs focused on eradicating the root causes of poverty, malnutrition, child abandonment and migration in Guatemala as well as the preservation of indigenous lands and culture.
